Author: Andreu Navarra Ordoño.
In August 1914, at the start of the First World War, the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII declared as outlawed any and all who openly proselytised for either of the two contending sides. However, the measure was ineffective, since public opinion fractured into multiple tides which filled the Spanish public sphere with tension. Cinemas closed to avoid fights, intellectuals became entangled in surprisingly violent, unbelievable controversies. Some politicians and writers were attacked in the street, multiple times. The writer and historian, Andreu Navarra Ordoño shows us how the Great War, the centenary of which begins this year, affected the ideologies and culture of our country between 1914 and 1918.
