Zafiro Productions and the Musical Company Dolores Marco present at the Theatre Reina Victoria of Madrid (26 Carrera de San Jerónimo) a refreshing cultural proposal for the summer afternoons: Zarzuela’s Season with two emblematic and very popular titles: La del Manojo de Rosas and La Verbena de la Paloma.
To begin, La del Manojo de Rosas premieres tomorrow Saturday 28 June and it will be playing until 13 July. With lyrics by Anselmo C. Carreño and Francisco Ramos de Castro and music by master Pablo Sorozábal, this zarzuela premiered with great success on 13 November 1934. Love, jealousy and passion in a zarzuela settled in Madrid during that time that has created unforgettable scenes and eternal music for those enthusiastic about the Spanish operetta.
From the day 16 until Sunday 27 July, the Theatre Reina Victoria will be full of joy, chotis (traditional dance of Madrid) and fair… Maybe the most famous zarzuela worldwide that has been represented in numerous theatres of Spain and abroad since it was premiered for the first time in 1894, La Verbena de la Paloma.
It has very famous and catchy fragments, which have been maintained until today, such as the verses of Mr Hilarión Una morena y una rubia or the duet of the habanera ¿Dónde vas con mantón de Manila?
The action takes places in Madrid, in the time of the premiere (1894), in the popular neighbourhoods of Madrid, during the festivities of the Virgin of La Paloma. Julián does not share the spirit of the celebration and, in the presence of “Señá” (lady) Rita, he says that this is because he suspects that Susana has told him she is not going to the fair on the pretext of going out on her own with some lover, which gives him something to start with to plan revenge against her. The “señá” Rita tries to comfort Julián encouraging him to go with her to the fair and to forget about his revenge.
