The Diplomat. Madrid
The US Ambassador to Spain, James Costos, continues imposing a new style on his social engagements. Since he arrived in Madrid with his partner, the decorator Michael Smith, he has been at the centre of a number of acts which have moved away from usual diplomatic custom. Among these, a party at the Embassy and a brunch at the Ritz to celebrate Smith’s birthday, to which were invited various Spanish and foreign personalities associated with the design world.
Now, Costos has convened his guests for the 4th of July celebrations, Independence Day in the United States, at the Conde Duque Cultural Centre, and not, as his predecessors have always done, in the gardens of his residence on the Paseo de la Castellana, always an informal atmosphere. On this occasion, guests are not required to use a tie either.
