The open top car, the best kept secret of the Kings’ security

June 20, 2014

A. Rubio. Madrid

Would the kings wave at the crowds from a closed or open vehicle on their itinerary through Madrid? This was the big question which kept reporters on the edge of their seats as they waited along the route that Their Majesties took after the proclamation of Philip VI in Parliament.

Security advised that it be a closed-top vehicle, appearances that it be open-top. The question was answered as it happened, since the decision was made at the very last moment, The Diplomat has been able to ascertain, after the Royal Household received assurances from the police.

The secret was even kept from the majority of the agents spread out along the route, who were surprised by the news that the Kings had left Parliament in an open-top car.

The Kings did the first part of the itinerary, from the Zarzuela Palace to the Parliament in a Rolls Royce, but when they left the Legislature, in order to be able to wave to those in attendance, they changed to an open-top vehicle as King Philip had wanted from the start.
