The Government of Spain has expressed its deep regret over the death of the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, a «true statesman» and a «defender of multilateralism as the only way capable of achieving progress, peace and dignity for all human beings».
«Kofi Annan embodied the values and principles of the United Nations”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation said in a statement. «He will be remembered for having opened the way to a profound reform of the Organization that will make it a more effective instrument at the service of all humanity», it added.
«Spain recognizes its commitment to peace, which won the Nobel Prize for the Organization under its leadership and led it to assume as its own the Spanish initiative of the Alliance of Civilizations», the statement continued.
Likewise, the Government highlighted «its leadership in the fight against poverty, giving impetus to the Millennium Development Goals and its dedication to the defense and protection of all human rights for all men and women on the planet».
«Kofi Annan was a good friend of Spain, a country he visited on numerous occasions», recalled the Government, which, therefore, presented «his sincere condolences to the widow and children of Kofi Annan and the entire family of the United Nations, thousands of women and men who today pay tribute and want to follow their example».
