The Government of Pedro Sánchez has chosen the diplomat Juan López-Dóriga as the new ambassador to Mexico, said sources to The Diplomat.
López-Dóriga will replace Luis Fernández-Cid in the Mexican capital, who has been in this diplomatic destination for more than four years. The new ambassador in Mexico has been in charge of the Spanish legation in Tunisia since January 2014 and the former Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis, thought of him to lead the Embassy in Chile, but the change of government paralyzed his appointment as well as that of forty other ambassadors.
The Embassy in Mexico is a highly coveted position among Spanish diplomats because of the political and historical ties between both countries. Precisely, the previous Executive of the PP requested in May the placet to name Ramón Gil-Casares in substitution of Fernández-Cid. However, his appointment was paralyzed with the arrival of Pedro Sánchez to power and the new Government now wants Gil-Casares to continue leading the Diplomatic School.
For Chile, the diplomat chosen to lead the Spanish Embassy is Enrique Ojeda, current ambassador in neighboring Bolivia, a person close to the PSOE since he was secretary general of External Action in the Junta de Andalucía and general director of Autonomic Cooperation with Manuel Chavez when the latter headed the Ministry of Territorial Policy. Then he was appointed ambassador to Salvador, counselor at the Embassy in London and, finally, ambassador to Bolivia last year.
