The Diplomat. 16/08/2018
The new ambassador of Spain to the UN Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), the leader of the PSOE Andrés Perelló, defended yesterday in an interview with Europa Press the appointment of ‘political’ ambassadors, not diplomats, especially before international organizations, because he considers that these «are more for politics than for diplomacy». His appointment has been criticized by the Association of Spanish Diplomats (ADE).
«Of course any ambassador, whether political or not, will represent the State and what the Government says, but there are places where we have to do a bit of politics, the world is falling down and we have to reinforce it with politics, there are criticisms that I do not understand», he said. Perelló said he understood that «diplomats have a certain corporatism».
