Spanish Agency for International Development and Cooperation (AECID) has contributed 100,000 euros to the Red Cross and Red Crescent to alleviate the situation of the populations affected by the earthquake last Sunday in Indonesia, according to a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The AECID responds to the call made by the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia) to cover the basic needs of some 80,000 people, the most affected by the earthquake, for an estimated time of 18 months, offering them shelter and covering their health care, sanitation and hygiene, drinking water, protection, et cetera. So far, the Red Crescent is supporting the tasks of evacuation, distribution of blankets, first aid and psychosocial support.

The European Commission also announced that it will allocate a total of 150,000 euros for emergency aid to the affected communities

According to data from the Government of Indonesia, the earthquake has killed 105 people, and 236 injured and thousands of people displaced by the damage to homes and infrastructure. It was felt mostly in the north of the island of Lombok, although it also affected other islands such as Sumbawa, Bali and eastern Java. There are more than 3.8 million people affected, 10,000 evacuated and 14,000 who have had to be sheltered.

Around 340 Spaniards had planned to leave Lombok by plane yesterday, according to information from the Foreign Ministry provided to Europa Press. The person in charge of the consular section of the Spanish embassy in Jakarta went to the island’s airport to provide assistance to Spaniards who needed it.
