The diplomat Robert Riley.
The Diplomat. 17/08/2018
The Trump Administration has appointed diplomat Robert Riley, currently Chargé d’Affairs at US Embassy in Minsk (Belarus), to head the US General Consulate in Barcelona, the Diplomat learned from US diplomatic sources.
Riley replaces Marcos Mandojana, who left the Catalan capital after the celebrations of July 4 and after having completed three years in that destination. The new consul will arrive to Barcelona at the end of August and its incorporation will take place, therefore, a few days after the first anniversary of the jihadist attacks in the Rambla and Cambrils.
The new consul has been in Minsk for two years and previously was ‘number two’ at the US Embassy in Budapest. In the Department of State he has worked in the office for Southern Europe, with special follow-up for the affairs of Turkey, Greece and Cyprus.
Prior to that, he was a political advisor to the US representation before the OAS and an information counselor at the Embassy in El Salvador. He was also stationed in Madrid, Bogotá and Honduras, hence he speaks Spanish easily.
