The diplomat Marta Betanzos will replace as head of the Embassy in Lisbon to Eduardo Gutiérrez Sáenz de Buruaga, who has barely been in the post for a year, said sources to The Diplomat.
Since 2015 Betanzos has been an advisor in the General Directorate for Foreign Policy and Security, under the direction of Enrique Mora. Previously, she was second head of the Spanish Embassy in Beijing (China) and with PP’s Government was a consultant in the General Directorate of Multilateral Affairs.
Under the socialist governments of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, she was Permanent Representative before the OSCE (2008-2011) in Vienna; Ambassador to Mali (2006-2008) and Director of the Multilateral Affairs and OSCE Division (2004-2006) while Miguel Ángel Moratinos was Foreign Minister.
With a degree in Law and a diploma in Psychology, Betanzos gained access to the Diplomatic Career in 1987 and among her first foreign destinations stands out as second head of the Spanish Embassy in Tripoli (Libya).
