Duque plans to travel to Spain on Wednesday.

Colombia’s president-elect, Iván Duque, will meet His Majesty the King and the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in Madrid on Friday, according to information provided to The Diplomat by reliable sources.

Duque plans to travel to Spain on Wednesday, to participate in a forum on economy and innovation, which will also be attended by, among others, the former US President Barack Obama; the leader of Ciudadanos, Albert Rivera; and the minister of Energy Transition and Environment, Teresa Ribera.

The sources consulted pointed out that Duque will visit King Felipe VI in the Zarzuela Palace halfway through the afternoon, after having met Sánchez at the Moncloa Palace. Duque had already spoken on the phone, a couple of weeks ago, with the head of the Spanish Executive, who called him to congratulate him on his victory in the elections held in Colombia. Then, they agreed to talk more calmly in Madrid about bilateral relations and about some international matters of common interest, among them, the situation in Venezuela.

Before holding meetings with the King and the president of the Government, Duque, who made a visit to the US last week, will take part, along with Obama, in the economic forum organized by the Advanced Leadership Foundation (ALF), to debate about the importance of the circular economy in Spain’s economic and social development.

Duque, who will take up his position on August 7, in Bogotá, pointed out his intention of speaking at the forum about the agenda of business development considered by Colombia and about the environmental agenda.
