US Ambassador to Spain, Richard Duke Buchan III, received yesterday in his office the former NATO’s Secretary General Javier Solana, weeks after his claim to travel visa-free to the US was rejected for having been in Iran before.
In the Embassy’s Twitter account, the Ambassador published a photograph in which he is seen with Solana. In a short text, he says that it has been «a great honor» to meet him. In addition, Duke Buchan wished Solana «a good trip during your next visit to the United States».
Last June, in compliance with the rules imposed by the Obama Administration, the Embassy refused to grant electronic authorization (ESTA) to Solana to travel to the United States, where he had to attend an act of the Brookings Institution, due to his previous trips to Iran. From the Embassy, he was told that, like any other person in the same situation, he should apply for a visa to enter US territory. Once the procedure was completed, the visa was granted without problems.
