The Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI), chaired by the Spanish Mariano Jabonero, has been admitted as an observer associated to the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), and is the first international organization in reaching such status. The decision was ratified at the Summit of Heads of State and Government that was held in Santa Maria, Isla de la Sal (Cape Verde).
The candidacy of the OEI was presented as the basis for a plan centered on three main areas: promotion of education, science and culture, promotion of the Portuguese language and strengthening of relations between the two organizations within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations.
