The Spanish Government congratulated Mexico yesterday on the good development of Sunday’s election, “in which the Mexican people have been able to peacefully and democratically exercise their right to vote”.
In a statement, the Executive congratulated Andrés Manuel López Obrador, leader of the coalition Juntos Haremos Historia (Together We’ll Make History), on the results of this presidential election, “in which the Mexican citizens have elected him to lead the nation in the next years”.
“Spain’s Government expresses its will to continue to work with the Mexican Government to accompany it and go more deeply into the close ties of sympathy and association that already unite the citizens of Spain and Mexico, and to build a future of prosperity and stability for all of them together”, it concluded.
For his part, the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, also congratulated López Obrador through his Twitter account and “the Mexican people, who start a new period of excitement and hope”.
The recently appointed secretary of State for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Juan Pablo de Laiglesia, congratulated “López Obrador and all those elected to represent the Mexican people” yesterday.

According to the fast recount system, the left-wing leader got 53% of the votes yesterday, between 30 and 40 points more than Ricardo Anaya (PAN) and José Antonio Meade (PRI), who admitted their defeat before the publication of the official results.
So did the acting president, Enrique Peña Nieto, who committed to facilitate “an organized and efficient transition”, and the Foreign Minister, Luis Videgaray, who declared, yesterday, that “the future president must have the support of everyone”.
In yesterday’s election, around 62.75% of the electors voted, but the percentage was much lower abroad, since only less than 100,000 participated, of the more than 12 million Mexicans registered abroad, which is less than 1%.
As for Spain, by the deadline to be accredited abroad -March 31- less than 3,000 of the 53,000 Mexicans resident in our country, 5.26%, had registered, according to data of the Electoral National Institute (INE is its Spanish acronym).
