The 42nd Session of the Committee of World Heritage of Unesco, gathered in Manama (Bahrain) yesterday decided to include the caliphal city of Medina Azahara, in Córdoba, in its World Heritage List. With the addition of this place, Spain has now 47 registered in the World Heritage List and continues to be the world’s third country with the most goods registered. Of them, 41 are goods of cultural heritage, 4 of natural heritage and 2 mixed.
The archaeological site of Medina Azahara corresponds to a city of new foundation built halfway through the 10th century as seat for the Caliphate of Córdoba by the Omeya dynasty of the west. The city was destroyed after a short period of life, being ignored from then until its recovery at the beginning of the 20th century.
