The Embassy of Cyprus celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Spain on Wednesday with a concert of the soprano Vivianna Giannaki and the guitarist Mariano Gil, at the Higher School of Singing of Madrid.
Ambassador Koula Sophianou emphasized the “close friendship that unites both countries” by going over it before presenting the logo of the 50th anniversary, made by Lara, a 13-year-old student of the Special Education School of the Niño Jesús Hospital.

The event was attended by many diplomatic representatives, such as those of Austria, Luxembourg, Poland, Tunisia, Egypt, Slovenia, Greece, Bulgaria and Haiti, among others, along with the director general for Relations with Countries of the EU and Candidates, Juan López-Herrera, who pointed out that “Spain and Cyprus are two friend countries that share the same sea and the same culture”.
The team of the Embassy of Cyprus with the representative of the association Friends of the Music, Museums and Palace Houses, and the musicians of the concert.
At the end of the concert, the Embassy offered those present one the great wonders of the Mediterranean island, its wine Comandería, the world’s oldest wine, with 30,000 years of history. A wine that Ricardo Corazón de León described as “the king of wines and the wine of kings” when he tried it during the festivities of his wedding with Berenguela of Navarre, celebrated in the Cypriot city of Limassol on May 12, 1191.
