The diplomat José María Muriel Palomino will be the new technical secretary general of the Foreign Ministry, replacing Beatriz Larrotcha, who will hold the position of the department’s Undersecretary, once Cristóbal González-Aller is appointed ambassador before the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva.
Muriel’s appointment, just like Larrotcha’s, is expected to take place on Friday at the Cabinet, according to diplomatic sources consulted by The Diplomat.
Muriel Palomino had been appointed, in January 2017, as ambassador on special mission for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, after having been assigned to Washington as counsellor-head of the Team of Justice and Domestic Affairs, and Human Rights of the Delegation of the European Union in the United States.
Throughout his career, which started in 1990, he has been attorney of the Court of Justice of the European Communities of Luxembourg and he has been appointed to the Spanish diplomatic representations before the European Union, the United States and Canada. He was also Spain’s consul general to Hannover and advisory member in the Office of the president of the Government.
