The Cabinet approved yesterday the appointment of the diplomat María Elena Gómez Castro as new director general of Defense Policy within the department of Maria Dolores de Cospedal.
In this way, the minister covers the diplomatic vacuum that led to the departure of Alejandro Alvargonzález as secretary general of Defense Policy to become NATO number three. Precisely, Gómez Castro was until now the deputy permanent representative of Spain before the NATO.
Born on September 10, 1969 in Zaragoza, she graduated in Law from the University of Salamanca and belongs to the Diplomatic Career. She has been used in Spanish diplomatic representations in Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo and before the European Union.
She was a national expert at the Directorate-General for Defense Issues of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, adviser for International Affairs of the Minister of Defense and deputy director general for Security at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, when she was decorated by France.
